Q: In the context of what Jesus says in Matthew 7:21-23, what is the will of God?

What is The Will of God?

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” What is the will of God??

Excerpt From The Answer

Set aside the idea of “finding God’s will” and focus on what we know of God’s plan, design, intent for our lives. The search for some divine idea of “God’s will for my life” is sadly an unnecessary detour.

Don’t miss, not everyone … but he who… So Jesus is distinguishing between the false prophets and the true believer. It is clear that God’s will is obedience to the Father. In the preceding verses, Jesus is dealing with false prophets. They’re crying out, Lord, Lord! An urgency or plea does not, we might say, get God’s attention. Rather, what God wants is our obedience. Are we eager to obey? Do we run to obey more swiftly than run to sin? Do we do the right thing in the right way and then go home?

Think of Matthew 6:10 in the Lord’s Prayer, “Your kingdom come, Your will be done.” 1 Thessalonians 4:1–5 says, “Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us instruction as to how you ought to walk and please God (just as you actually do walk), that you excel still more. For you know what commandments we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God.”
