“As I was researching for this booklet, I came across different thoughts about cultural stereotypes with gender. And one of the things I kept coming across was just the notion that parents should not overreact if their kids don’t map neatly onto gender stereotypes.That’s not uncommon at all. And I think we do have to expand our understanding. I mean, it’s perfectly fine for a young woman to like rough and tumble play. It’s perfectly fine for a young boy to be interested in music instead of sports.
If you go back to the Bible, the Bible doesn’t give you a ton of specifics about gender expression, outside of a few roles within the church and then marriage. But David, the sweet psalmist of Israel, is a musician. He’s filled with emotion and then he’s also a warrior king in different regards. I think we need to be careful not to overreact when kids don’t meet stereotypes.”
