Does The Bible Condone Polygamy?
Deuteronomy 17 mentions not taking many wives so we are not led astray. Where does it direct to have just one wife? It seems in the Old Testament that men are allowed to have more than one wife but women must be monogamous. Does the Bible condone polygamy?
Excerpt From The Answer
“Monogamy was God’s design yet when polygamy occurred, it was never described in a positive light. They knew God’s law but chose to add wives, nonetheless. And we note when we have information about two wives, as with Rachel and Leah, one is loved / treated well, the other is not. When we read of the multiplication of wives, it is always under the shadow of the law – monogamy. The New Testament is clear, for example, elders were to be husbands of one wife. So God’s design was lifelong, heterosexual, monogamous marriage. Man ignored God’s law just as he has since Adam and Eve’s first sin.”
