Summary:

As parents prepare students for college, academics may not be the greatest challenge they face. In this episode of inContext, Michael Easley sits down with therapist, counselor, and author Dr. Gary Lovejoy to discuss how today’s college campuses often challenge students’ worldview long before they challenge their intellect.

Drawing from decades of teaching at secular universities, Dr. Lovejoy explains why many Christian students lose confidence in their faith—not because Christianity lacks answers, but because they were never equipped to defend what they believe. He identifies six types of students who are especially vulnerable to ideological influence, explores the role of loneliness and social media in shaping young adults, and explains why critical thinking is one of the most important skills parents and churches can cultivate.

The conversation also addresses delayed adolescence, the dangers of intellectual complacency, and how students can learn to distinguish expertise from opinion when engaging professors and cultural ideas. Rather than responding with fear, Dr. Lovejoy encourages families to create homes where questions are welcomed, current events are discussed, and biblical truth is examined thoughtfully.

Whether you’re raising children, leading a student ministry, or mentoring young adults, this conversation offers practical encouragement for preparing the next generation to stand firm in both faith and truth.

Takeaways:

  • Students are far less likely to abandon their faith when they understand why they believe what they believe.
  • Critical thinking is developed through asking questions, evaluating evidence, and comparing ideas with Scripture.
  • Loneliness and the desire to belong make many college students especially vulnerable to ideological influence.
  • Parents and churches should create environments where difficult cultural and theological questions can be discussed openly.
  • Social media rewards quick reactions, but wisdom requires careful research, reflection, and discernment.
  • Preparing students for college begins long before move-in day through intentional discipleship at home and in the church.
