How Could Angels Rebel Against God?

Q: Heaven is without sin, pain or bad. So Rev 12:3-4 outlines Satan took 1/3 of the angels with him to turn on God. How was any entity in heaven able to do this? While angels do not have the omnipotent knowledge of things to come, they could not have thought that departing would end well. How would that level of arrogance and sin exist in heaven?

Summary

In this episode, Dr. E tackles a fascinating question: how could Satan and the angels rebel if heaven is supposed to be perfect? Dr. Easley explains that the rebellion didn’t happen in the final, sinless heaven believers often imagine, but within a broader spiritual realm made up of “thrones, dominions, powers, and authorities.” This distinction helps clarify how evil could exist among created beings without contradicting God’s perfect future kingdom.

He also introduces the concept of “paradise” (paradiso) as an intermediate state where believers are with Christ now, awaiting the final resurrection and the new heaven and new earth. While this present paradise includes awareness, it is reframed by hope and the presence of Christ.

Dr. Easley emphasizes that angels are powerful but limited—they are not omniscient, omnipotent, or redeemable. Their rebellion was rooted in pride, much like humanity’s fall, but unlike humans, they have no path to redemption. Ultimately, believers aren’t called to fight spiritual forces directly but to stand firm in faith, trusting God’s authority over every realm.

Takeaways:

  • Satan’s rebellion occurred in a spiritual realm, not the final, sinless heaven believers will one day experience.
  • Angels are powerful but limited beings who lack omniscience, omnipotence, and the ability to be redeemed.
  • Pride—not ignorance—drove Satan and other angels to rebel against God.
  • Believers who die are with Christ in “paradise,” awaiting the final resurrection and new creation.
  • The spiritual world includes complex realms described as powers, dominions, and authorities.
  • Christians are called to stand firm in faith, not directly fight spiritual forces.
