How is it Possible to Lie to The Holy Spirit?
How is it possible to lie to the Holy Spirit? Are true believers even capable of this? What does scripture say about it?
Excerpt From The Answer
“Acts 5:3–4 says, ‘But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back some of the price of the land? “While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.’ Acts 5:9 says, ‘Then Peter said to her, “Why is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well.’ Peter accused Ananias, claiming Satan had filled his heart. The verb translated “filled” is eplērōsen, from plēroō, control or influence. The command of Ephesians 5:18 uses the same verb.
Ananias did not have to sell his land. If he sold it, he still could have retained the proceeds. Dedicating the proceeds was voluntary. Once pledged, however, it became a different matter. It had been dedicated to the community. But lying about the proceeds, he broke a sacred trust. Ultimately, he had lied to God. Not that he had not betrayed the community. Not that he had not lied to the Spirit. To betray the community is to lie to the Spirit that fills the community, and to falsify the Spirit of God is an affront to God Himself.”
