Will There Be Mourning in Heaven Before The New Earth?
Q: I recently finished a Bible study on Revelation and have a lingering question. Revelation states that after Satan is permanently cast into the lake of fire and after the final judgement, God will create a new heavens and a new earth. In the new heavens and new earth there will be no more tears, mourning, etc because sin is no longer present and the heirs of Christ are transformed to be like Him. Because God remains in control, Satan must ask permission or be allowed to wreak havoc, evil, and pain on earth. Since (If) Satan still has access to God and the souls of the heirs of Christ that have died physically are in God’s presence, is there mourning in heaven for the souls, angels, and God until the new heavens and new earth?
Summary
Dr. E answers a listener’s question about whether mourning exists in heaven before God creates the new heavens and new earth. He draws from Revelation 20 to explain the premillennial view: Christ will reign for a literal thousand years before Satan’s release to deceive the nations. Even in a perfect environment, humanity’s sinful nature persists, revealing mankind’s deep depravity and God’s sovereign plan. Satan tempts and deceives but never forces people to sin, and we must avoid attributing every hardship to him.
In heaven, believers shed their sin nature and experience complete transformation in Christ’s presence. The overwhelming glory and holiness of Jesus eclipse every earthly concern, leaving no room for fear, worry, or grief. Dr. E underscores that while we can speculate about prophetic details, Scripture guarantees God’s complete justice and the full redemption of His people. In light of eternity, we must focus on living faithfully now, knowing the presence of Christ will surpass every sorrow we have ever known.
