What Are Your Thoughts on AI as a Christian?
Michael, thanks for doing everything you do. Was curious to get your thoughts on AI. I’ve used Chat GPT and it’s almost like having a smart personal assistant. It’s also terrifying. I also see trailers for movies about robots taking over the world and it’s like… the warning signs are there – what are we thinking by moving forward even more so with this?! To give an inanimate object sentient. Is it un-similar to the Tower of Babel? We’re playing God, right?
Excerpt From The Answer
“In many ways, we have been here a while. Robotic surgeries, smart technology (from thermostats to Siri / Alexa commands), to your search engine collecting every keystroke to know all about you. This is not a brand new issue. Not to mention the 24/7 cell phones data collecting tracker we have. From a spiritual perspective, I suspect anything we have created, built, or thought of can be good or evil.
As noted, the tower of Babel was linked to being like God, or trying to make a name for ourselves. Motorized cars v. horses, electric v. gas lighting, natural gas v. open flame house heaters met with fear and skepticism. Some even fear microwave ovens to this day. And many thought the same of radio, much less Christian broadcasting on radio, and many other technological advancements.
Playing God? I think we do it in innumerable ways. Will our God allow us to go beyond our limits? Warning signs? They are everywhere, all day long. Either we choose to worship and obey our Savior or not. Believers rest in the sovereignty of God, even more than AI.”
