Q: I’m looking to buy a new Bible. What do you recommend?
Let’s talk about translations, cross-references, footnotes, and other features within a Bible: what’s best? What’s helpful for personal study, and what might be extraneous?
Dr. E shares practical tips for what to look for in a new Bible.
Elements:
Yapp – the overlay of cover to protect pages. Helps with longevity but is also up to your preference! Not everyone likes the feel of it.
Three important factors to look for inside a Bible:
Font
Columns
Cross-references
Study Bibles: Some people love them, but I don’t think they are best for personal/devotional study. Just use Tom Constable’s Notes.
Other Tips
Breaking in a Bible: flip through and gently pull each page to ensure your Bible doesn’t immediately open to the same creased place each time you grab it.
Reconditioning: if you get leather, especially bonded leather, you want to recondition it periodically.
Pens: Deluxe Micro from Uni-Ball Make sure it’s a fine tip and waterproof.
