Summary:

In this episode, Michael sits down with his pastor and longtime friend, Darren Tyler, lead pastor of Conduit Church in Franklin, Tennessee, for a wide-ranging and deeply honest conversation about sin, the heart, and discipleship in today’s cultural moment. Drawing from a recent Barna study, they explore a troubling trend: many Americans—and even professing Christians—no longer believe that all people are sinners or that sin is a serious problem.

Darren reflects on his journey from the music industry into pastoral ministry and explains how cultural narratives about being “basically good,” following your heart, and reframing sin as trauma have reshaped how people understand responsibility, repentance, and grace. Together, Michael and Darren unpack how diminished views of sin weaken both evangelism and discipleship, leaving people without a clear need for the gospel.

Rather than minimizing real pain or injustice, this conversation presses toward a biblical fulcrum—owning our present reality, acknowledging the wickedness of the human heart, and running toward joyful obedience in Christ. The episode offers clarity, compassion, and hope, reminding listeners that the gospel is not about making sinners comfortable, but about offering forgiveness, freedom, and new life through Jesus.

Takeaways:

  • A diminishing view of sin weakens both evangelism and discipleship.
  • The idea that people are “basically good” contradicts Scripture and lived experience.
  • Following your heart is dangerous when the heart itself is deceitful.
  • Naming sin is not about shame, but about opening the door to grace.
  • Discipleship requires clarity, courage, and consistent engagement with God’s Word.
  • The gospel offers forgiveness and freedom that no cultural narrative can replace.

ABOUT DARREN TYLER

As Lead Pastor of Conduit Church, Darren Tyler has a front-row seat to watching God use a scrappy, nimble group of Jesus followers to kick down the gates of hell—both in our city and around the world. After a 20-year career as an executive in the music industry God called Darren to plant Conduit Church in Franklin, TN.  A husband to Shannon, father, author and host of the Conduit Deeper podcast, Darren describes his role as that of a conductor in an orchestra—not playing the instrument, but awakening the possibilities in individuals what can happen when they work together delivering their spiritual gifts.  Darren continues to travel the globe extensively to some of the hardest places to answer Jesus commission to go and make disciples.  As Darren says, “we go to the hard places because the easy places are taken.”

Beyond the pulpit, Darren has a fun history in Christian music. Before becoming an agent/ manager for artists like Third Day and Kutless—you can spot him in early ‘90s music videos for CCM artists like 4Him, Carman, and Al Denson.

Whether leading, teaching, or equipping others, Darren’s mission is simple: to mentor and encourage and people to live courageously for Jesus, bringing His love and truth to both the community in front of us and the world around us.
