We may not know why we suffer, but Christ shows us how: faithfully, without sin, and trusting the righteous Judge.

Christ’s Suffering, Our Sanctification (1 Peter 2:21-25)

This is part of a series on 1 Peter.

Summary

Pain and suffering raise some of life’s hardest questions. We want to know why suffering happens and how we can make it stop. But in 1 Peter 2:21–25, Peter does not give us an explanation for every “why.” Instead, he shows us how to live faithfully when suffering comes.

Christ is our example. Jesus suffered unjustly, yet He did not sin, retaliate, threaten, or defend Himself. Instead, He entrusted Himself to the One who judges righteously. For believers, this becomes the pattern for responding to pain, injustice, loss, and disappointment.

Peter also reminds us that Christ’s suffering was not merely an example. He bore our sins on the cross so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. His temporary suffering accomplished our eternal healing.

We may never understand why God allows certain suffering. Some questions may remain unanswered this side of heaven. But we can know whom to trust in the midst of it. Christ has already walked the path before us.

When suffering comes, we are called to follow His example, trust the righteous Judge, and remember that our ultimate healing is found in Christ. The cross reminds us that God has not remained distant from our pain. He entered it Himself.
