After Someone Becomes a Follower of Christ Can They Stop Sinning?

After someone becomes a follower of Christ, can they stop sinning aside from their gratitude and obedience to God?

Excerpt From The Answer

“Thoughts and motives are really frustrating because that’s where we get in trouble. Matthew 5 is an interesting chapter. Matthew 5 through 8 is a package. In Matthew 5, Jesus said, ‘You’ve heard it said, but I say to you…’ The one that I always use as an illustration, ‘You’ve heard it said you shall not commit adultery.’ We understand that’s one of the ten commandments. He continues, ‘But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery in his heart.’

With that one statement, I’m toast. What did Jesus do? He turned up the heat. He went from the law about adultery to if you think about it, you’ve already committed adultery. So what is He saying in that bigger context? Your motives, your heart, your lust are just as guilty as the actionable sin you would do.”
