Peter reminds us that our identity is found in Christ: chosen, royal, holy, and called to proclaim the One who saved us.

Chosen With a Purpose (1 Peter 2:4-10)

This is part of a series on 1 Peter.

Summary

In 1 Peter 2:4–10, Peter answers one of our deepest questions: Who are you? We often define ourselves by our careers, personalities, strengths, relationships, or accomplishments. Those descriptions may be helpful, but they cannot provide our ultimate identity.

Peter gives believers a far greater identity. We are living stones that Christ builds together into a spiritual house. Christ is the living cornerstone, chosen and precious in God’s sight. Because we belong to Him, God also chooses us, values us, and calls us His own.

Our identity is not rooted in personality assessments, accomplishments, ethnicity, or social position. In Christ, we are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and God’s own possession. We have received mercy and become part of God’s people.

That identity also gives us a purpose. Peter says we are to proclaim the excellencies of the One who called us out of darkness and into His marvelous light. Our Christian life is not merely about enjoying salvation. The question, then, is not simply, “Who am I?” It is, “What does God say about me, and what am I doing with the identity He has given me?” Our identity in Christ should shape how we live, worship, and proclaim Him.
