Summary:

Christians are called to more than private faith. We are also called to live faithfully as citizens within the culture and government God has given us. In this conversation, Michael Easley and Troy Miller, president of the National Religious Broadcasters, discuss why Christians should engage the civic process with courage, wisdom, and biblical conviction.

The conversation begins with Romans 13 and 1 Timothy 2, reminding believers to respect governing authorities and pray for those who lead. Troy explains why midterm elections matter, especially because lawmakers shape legislation, budgets, policies, and the direction of government.

They also address a growing lack of civic understanding among Christians. Voting is not simply about personalities or political parties. It involves choosing leaders whose governing philosophies will shape the world we leave to our children and grandchildren.

For pastors, the challenge is even greater. Shepherds are called to guide, teach, protect, and make disciples. Fear of controversy should not prevent them from addressing important cultural issues. Troy encourages pastors to distinguish biblical teaching from political endorsement and to lead with courage.

Ultimately, the question is not whether Christians should engage. It is whether our engagement—or neutrality—reflects love for our neighbors, fulfills the gospel, and helps make faithful disciples.

Takeaways:

  • Christians are called to respect governing authorities and pray for those in leadership.
  • Voting matters because elected leaders shape laws, budgets, policies, and the direction of government.
  • Christian civic engagement should be rooted in biblical conviction rather than political tribalism or personality.
  • Pastors have a responsibility to help their congregations understand the cultural issues shaping their world.
  • Courageous leadership does not require telling people whom to vote for, but it does require teaching biblical truth clearly.
  • Christians should ask whether their civic neutrality actually demonstrates love, fulfills the gospel, and makes disciples.
