A Living Hope and an Eternal Inheritance (1 Peter 1:3-5)

In this sermon from 1 Peter 1:3–5, Dr. Michael Easley reminds believers that their confidence rests not in their circumstances but in God’s finished work. Writing to Christians scattered by persecution, Peter calls them to remember two unshakable truths: what God has done and what God has given.

God, according to His great mercy, caused believers to be born again into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Salvation is not something we achieve or earn. It begins with God’s initiative, His mercy, and His sovereign grace. Because Christ conquered death, Christians possess a hope that is certain, alive, and anchored in eternity.

Peter then points to the believer’s inheritance. Unlike earthly possessions that rust, fade, or lose value, the inheritance waiting for God’s children is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is reserved in heaven and guarded by God’s own power. Nothing can diminish what God has prepared for those who belong to Him.

While life in this world often includes suffering, uncertainty, and disappointment, believers can live with confidence because their future is secure. Christians are not defined by temporary trials but by an eternal inheritance purchased through Christ. Remembering God’s mercy, living hope, and promised inheritance produces gratitude, perseverance, and unwavering confidence in every season.
