An Eternal Inheritance (1 Peter 3:8-12)

This is part of a series on 1 Peter

Summary

In 1 Peter 3:8–12, Peter summarizes what righteous living should look like in the lives of believers. He calls Christians to be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kind-hearted, and humble in spirit. These virtues shape how we respond to difficult people, suffering, disagreement, and hostility.

Peter specifically challenges believers not to return evil for evil or insult for insult. Instead, Christians are called to give a blessing because they have been called to inherit a blessing. This does not mean righteous behavior earns God’s blessing. Our inheritance comes from God’s grace and salvation, not from our performance.

Peter then draws from Psalm 34 to remind believers how to pursue a life that reflects their calling. We must keep our tongues from evil, turn from evil, do good, seek peace, and pursue it. God sees the righteous, hears their prayers, and remains attentive to their suffering.

Our understanding of blessing also needs recalibration. Material possessions, health, success, and comfort may be temporal blessings, but they are not the ultimate inheritance. In Christ, believers possess every spiritual blessing and an eternal inheritance that cannot be taken away.

This life is not our home. Because our future is secure in Christ, we can live differently now—with humility, compassion, peace, and confidence in God’s eternal redemption.

Takeaways

  • Righteous living reflects harmony, sympathy, brotherly love, kindness, and humility.
  • Christians should respond to evil and insults by giving a blessing rather than seeking retaliation.
  • God bases our spiritual inheritance on salvation, not on what we earn through righteous behavior.
  • We should measure God’s blessing by more than material possessions, comfort, success, or circumstances.
  • Psalm 34 calls believers to reject evil, do good, seek peace, and pursue it.
  • Because Christ secures our eternal inheritance, we can live confidently knowing this world is not our home.
