How Do You Clearly Explain The Gospel to Young Children Without Oversimplifying Salvation?
Q: My husband and I are parents to two children (2 and 3.5) and pregnant with number 3. Our 3.5 year old daughter is getting to the age where she can connect more during family worship. We are trying to clearly and accurately introduce the Gospel to her in a way that she can grasp. We don’t want to misrepresent or water down salvation for her. Both my husband and I were introduced to salvation as “inviting Jesus into our hearts”, but have grown to dislike this language as it oversimplifies saying a prayer and moving on. How do we explain to a toddler, and expand on the thought as she grows, what it is to make God Lord of her life and love God more than she loves her sin?
Summary
In this episode, Dr. E addresses a parenting question: how do you clearly explain the gospel to young children without oversimplifying salvation? Speaking to parents of toddlers, he encourages them not to rush children into a “decision moment,” but instead to faithfully teach the gospel in everyday life.
Dr. Easley explains that children can understand concepts like faith, trust, and belief, even if their comprehension is still developing. Rather than relying on phrases like “ask Jesus into your heart,” he encourages parents to use biblical language that points children toward trusting Christ for salvation. He reminds listeners that parenting reflects the command of Deuteronomy 6 — teaching God’s truth throughout daily life.
Using simple Scripture passages like Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Romans 5:8, and Ephesians 2:8–9, parents can explain sin, grace, and salvation in ways children can grasp over time. A child’s profession of faith may begin early, but spiritual growth continues throughout life in the process of sanctification.
Ultimately, Dr. Easley reassures parents that God loves their children even more than they do. Their role is to plant seeds faithfully, pray consistently, and trust the Lord to draw their children to Himself.
