Was Mordecai Out of The Will of God?
Was Mordecai “out of the will of God?” In a current study of Esther, one commentary described Mordecai as ‘out of the will of God’ because he stayed behind in Babylon. I have never heard this take on the uncle/cousin of Esther. Your thoughts, Dr. E?
Excerpt From The Answer
“It is safe to say he might not have been a pious Jew. We do not know why he did not take the opportunity to leave when Cyrus the Great allowed exiles to return to Jerusalem. Could his introduction in Esther 2:5-7 suggest God’s providence? While in exile he welcomed Esther into his home to care for her as his own daughter. While Haman was presented as prideful, Mordecai is portrayed as humble. He shows his trust in God’s sovereignty in Esther 4:14 when he says, ‘“For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place and you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?”
