Q: Did other people resurrect when Jesus did? What is the correct understanding and interpretation of Matthew 27:52-53?

Did Other People Resurrect When Jesus Did?

After the death of Jesus in Matt 27:52-53 it states that the tombs also opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised,  53  and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. Does this mean that physical bodies resurrected and witnessed to people or does it symbolize their spiritual accession into heaven?

Excerpt From The Answer

“And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. 51 And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many. 54 Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, ‘Truly this was the Son of God!’” – Matthew 27:50-54

“As much as science fiction can compel us, we have to stick to what’s true. We know Christ proved life over death. He brought Himself, an others, back from the dead. We believe those He raised with Him were believers. They were Jewish pious believers who believed in the Messiah. So, they would be the only ones who would resurrect and ascend with Him later on. The passage does illustrate the power of the resurrection. It was able to tear a curtain and cause an earthquake at the crucifixion. There’s a lot of drama and physical geographic change.”
