When suffering comes, don't fear or retaliate. Set apart Christ as Lord, hold onto hope, and let faithful suffering display Christ to others.

Suffering With Hope (1 Peter 3:13-17)

This is part of a series on 1 Peter

Summary

In 1 Peter 3:13–17, Peter reminds believers that faithful living does not guarantee a life free from suffering. Christians should pursue what is good, even when doing so brings mistreatment or persecution. Righteousness means doing the right thing in the right way, regardless of the personal cost.

When suffering comes, Peter gives believers a clear response: do not fear intimidation, do not become troubled, and sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts. Fear naturally stirs us toward anxiety, retaliation, or self-protection. Instead, believers can reset their hearts by remembering that Christ is Lord.

Peter also calls Christians to remain ready to give an account for the hope within them. That defense should come with gentleness and reverence, not hostility or a desire to win an argument. Our response to suffering can become a visible testimony to the reality of Christ in us.

Suffering also requires a long theological perspective. God remains sovereign even when we cannot understand what He is doing. We may not see His hand or explain our circumstances, but we can continue trusting His Word.

Ultimately, the way we suffer influences others. Faithful suffering can display Christlikeness, encourage other believers, and leave an enduring impression on those watching our lives.
