Chapel Series: Fads, Conferences, and Self Help

Fads, Conferences, and Self Help was originally recorded in 2005 as part of the Nathan D. Maier Memorial chapel series at Dallas Theological Seminary.

  • Beware of the influence of fads and self-help mechanisms in the Christian culture.
  • Stay true to the teachings of Jesus Christ and be discerning of false influences within the church.
  • Understand the security of believers and the danger of apostasy.
  • Be aware of deceptive doctrines and false teachers, and guard against hypocrisy and seared consciences.
  • Practice gratitude and enjoy God’s creation, while avoiding prohibitions and false teachings.

Excerpt From The Sermon

“Using the phrase, In Jesus’ name is not a formula or amendment we put on the front of our meal. One of the things I’m trying to do in my personal life, and I would encourage you to do as well, is to change the way you pray entirely. As I analyze my own prayer life, I use about 15 to 18 synonyms every time I sit down to pray. And years ago, I started writing my prayers out just to make me think. People say, ‘That’s not very spiritual to write your prayers out.’ Gee, the Psalms are all written down. So I started writing my prayers out, thinking about structure and what I’m asking for. These prayers have become a rich part of my devotional life.

I often have to ask myself, ‘What am I really asking the Sovereign of the universe to do for me? Am I really trying to worship the God of all creation? How am I, this little fleck of nothing, redeemed by Jesus Christ in the image of God? How should I relate to God?’”
