Excerpt From The Interview
“I do think that doubt is inevitable. One of the things that I like to say is doubt is not a Christian problem, it’s a human problem. And in the absence of certainty, there’ll always be room for doubt. The question is, which worldview best closes the doubt gap? So being a Christian doesn’t mean that we escape all doubts because we’re finite. Of course we’re going to have doubts. But I think that there’s a difference between skeptical doubt and sincere doubt. I think Jesus can distinguish that.
Jesus paid His greatest compliment to John the Baptist on the heel of his doubts because Jesus can handle our doubts. I find that incredibly encouraging. A great example is Zacharias and Mary. Zacharias was skeptical and experienced a judgment. On the other hand, Mary seemingly gets the same message, but she displays a sincere and curious doubt that is pleasing to God.
There’s this skeptical doubt that I think we want to get away from. That’s what I see happening with progressive Christianity and those who are just celebrating doubt. No Christian who truly has been in love with Jesus celebrates their doubt. They will agonize over their doubts. If somebody just feels like it’s no big deal to doubt, then we should question and doubt if they ever really were touched by a romantic relationship with Jesus.”
