Is a Person Still Saved If They Once Put Their Trust in Christ and Now Don’t?
Q: Hi Dr. E!
Once again, thank you for your podcast. I am a huge fan! In light of your most recent episode, my question is what if you have someone who “ was a Christian” and now renounces the faith and is atheist. Is that person saved if they once did put their trust in Christ and now don’t? Thank you!
Summary
What happens when someone once professes faith in Christ… and later renounces it? In this episode of Ask Dr. E, Michael Easley tackles one of the most difficult and emotional theological questions: If a person truly trusted Christ and now claims to be an atheist, are they still saved?
Dr. Easley explains the doctrine of eternal security by walking through key passages like Ephesians 1:13, where believers are “sealed” with the Holy Spirit. He points to Jesus’ promises in John 3:16 and 10:27–28—no one can snatch Christ’s sheep from His hand. Salvation rests on what Christ has done, not on what we do.
He also acknowledges theological differences dating back to Jacob Arminius and the Synod of Dort, where debates over losing salvation took shape. So what explains someone walking away? Two possibilities: they were never truly converted, or they are living in rebellion and apathy. Either way, the response is the same—pray boldly, speak truth lovingly, and trust the Holy Spirit to convict and restore. Salvation may feel “too good to be true,” but if it depends on Christ alone, it really is secure.
Takeaways:
- Salvation depends on Christ’s finished work, not our performance.
- Believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit at the moment of faith.
- Jesus promises His sheep will never be snatched from His hand.
- The debate over losing salvation traces back to Arminian theology.
- A person who walks away either never believed or is living in rebellion.
- Our response should be prayer, loving confrontation, and trust in God’s sovereignty.
