Excerpt From The Interview
“We don’t realize that faith is only defined by its object. I didn’t wake up this morning and feel like being a Christian. In fact, I felt the opposite. I would cancel my whole day if I went with my feelings. Faith is never just something we work up in and of ourselves. We live in such a feelings dominated culture. I think a lot of us doubt that we have enough faith. Faith is never complimented by whether or not it’s grandiose, you’re either in or you’re out. You either believe or you don’t that Jesus died for your sins, was buried and rose from the grave three days later.
Faith, when you understand that it’s defined by evidence, really takes this whole nebulous feeling factor out of it. Because some days we don’t even feel like we’re a Christian, that doesn’t mean we stop being Christian, that means we continue to wrap ourselves in the truth of what we have believed. So there’s a content element to our faith that we have to believe in order to be Christians. And what’s amazing about it, we see that Christianity provides irrefutable truth. I mean, in the first four verses of John’s gospel, he says, ‘You can have certainty about these things.’
He doesn’t point to some kind of esoteric, secretive knowledge. He points at the facts of Jesus’s resurrection. In John 2 Jesus said, ‘I’ll destroy this temple and I’ll rebuild it in three days.’ The disciples didn’t get it until after He rose from the dead. When we lock into faith in truth and evidence, we can interpret the scripture in light of that truth, and then things become much more clear.”
