Excerpt From The Sermon

“Messiah is a word from the Hebrew that means ‘the anointed one.’ In the Old Testament, a picture of anointing took place for a priest or a king. Now, we don’t think of anointing today like it was done back then. We think of a smudge of oil on a forehead, perhaps. The way anointing was done in the Old Testament, was similar to what it would feel if you had been out working in a hot, arid climate, perhaps overseas in the services or out in the field somewhere for a long period of time, and you get your first nice, hot bath.

To be anointed in the Old Testament was to have oil poured on top of you, and it was refreshing, and it combed out the dust and the dirt and the grime and the parched skin. And it doesn’t sound too refreshing to us, but to them it was very refreshing. And they were being anointed by oil to picture the anointing of the Holy Spirit, who is going to be poured on them.

Isaiah 61:1 says, ‘The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to prisoners.’ That’s what Messiah is anointed to do.”
